“Lest I leave you with the impression that Unity is a perfect game, it’s not. It’s best you discover these moments on your own. I have to wonder if Ubisoft could string enough of these together to form a new game, similar to Captain Toad spinning off from Super Mario 3D World. These heavily scripted, larger than life blockbuster moments of pure action are a welcome change of pace. And finally, the Animus missions actually left me wanting more. It's almost like a Rube Goldberg machine, stringing together smaller objectives which result in a butter-smooth and stealthy completion of your assignment. Or you can use a crowd to distract guards, set a building on fire, steal a key to unlock a window, or enter from underneath the structure and lay in wait for your victim. Sure, you can go in shooting and swinging your sword.

It’s also refreshing to see Assassin’s Creed fully embrace the open-ended assassination, a mechanic we've seen properly executed in games like Dishonored. Soon my wallet was bursting weapon and armor upgrades that once seemed unobtainable were within my budget. And enhancements to the theatre also increased the amount of money waiting for me each time I returned to my establishment. “For instance, upgrading my theatre unlocked missions which rewarded me financially. Unity might be the most beautiful video game I've ever played. There is an absolutely palpable sense of time and space. Flags are burning, as is the King in effigy. Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of NPCs line the walkways and plazas, adding to the sense that Paris is teetering on the edge of a revolution. Then there are the streets, crowded with angry citizens all yelling and jeering while overwhelmed guards hold them at bay.

Climbing Notre Dame and working my way inside gave me a unique sense of joy, seeing this historic landmark from a perspective that few ever will. Like a tourist, I would find myself distracted by the ornate paintings on the ceiling of a cathedral, or the way the light danced through a stained-glass window. The gold leafing outlining the interiors, the rich parquet flooring, the artwork and tapestries on the walls - I just wanted to stop and drink it all in. “As pretty as I heard Unity is, I wasn't prepared for the rich colors, shimmering textures, and the attention to detail that brought this snapshot in time to life.
